Steel is non-combustible, but it loses strength rapidly at high temperatures. In a fire, an unprotected steel structure can deform and even lose its load-bearing capacity before evacuation and firefighting operations are complete. That is why load-bearing elements – columns, beams, trusses and bracing – need fire protection that slows down the heating of the steel.
We provide fire protection for steel structures in new and refurbished buildings. The method and thickness of protection are selected to suit the required fire resistance class, the type of section and the conditions in which the structure operates.
Fire resistance class R
For load-bearing elements, requirements are expressed as class R – load-bearing capacity. The number after the letter indicates the time in minutes for which the structure retains its load-bearing capacity under fire conditions, e.g. R 15, R 30, R 60, R 90 or R 120. The required class is specified in the design documentation on the basis of the building’s fire resistance category.
Methods of protecting steel structures
Intumescent coatings
Thin-film coatings that swell when exposed to high temperatures, forming a layer that insulates the steel. They preserve the appearance of the structure, which makes them well suited to exposed elements. The coating thickness is selected according to the member’s cross-section, the critical temperature and the required R class.
Sprayed fire protection
Sprayed fire protection compounds and plasters applied directly to the structure. They make it possible to achieve higher fire resistance classes and to protect large areas quickly, e.g. the floor and roof structures of halls.
Fire protection board encasements
Fire protection board cladding, dry-fixed around columns and beams. It provides a neat, even finish and also performs well where high fire resistance classes are required.
How we select the protection
When selecting a system, we consider factors such as the required R class, the shape and dimensions of the section (section factor), the critical temperature given in the design, environmental conditions and the desired finish. We use manufacturers’ systems supplied with the full set of documents required for acceptance.
Scope of work
- assessment and preparation of the structure’s surfaces,
- application of coatings, sprayed protection or encasements to the required thickness,
- thickness measurements of the completed protection,
- marking of protected elements,
- as-built documentation, including measurement reports and documentation for the systems used.
We protect steel structures in production halls and warehouses, retail, office and public buildings, as well as mezzanines, support structures and floors.
